Martin G. O'Grady, MD, FACS, RPVI
General, Vascular & Trauma Surgery

Dr. O'Grady received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and also completed his surgical residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital.

After completing his surgical residency he moved to England for one year to obtain a broader experience in general and vascular surgery.

He returned to enter practice near Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1986 to 1989. In late 1989, he relocated his practice to Virginia Beach Surgery and has remained here until the present time.

Dr. O'Grady has served on numerous committees at Virginia Beach General Hospital as well as Department of Surgery Chairman. He has held positions as treasurer, vice president and president of the medical staff. He is currently the director of the Trauma program at Virginia Beach General Hospital. Dr. O'Grady enjoys a wide range of surgical practice in both general and vascular surgery.

Joseph M. Dalton, MD, FACS, RPVI, RVT

General, Vascular & Trauma Surgery

Dr. Dalton was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He received a Bachelors of Arts from Franklin & Marshall College in 1986 with departmental honors in Chemistry and a minor in Anthropology.

Dr. Dalton graduated from the Columbia University of Physicians & Surgeons in New York in 1990. He was a surgical resident, chief resident and surgical fellow at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.

Dr. Dalton is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In addition, he is a Registered Vascular Technician (RVT), and the Medical Director of The Virginia Beach Surgery Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory. He practices general surgery, vascular surgery, and surgical oncology. He participates in trauma call at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and is an active member of the Virginia Beach General Medical Staff.

Joseph P. McDermott, MD, FACS

General & Trauma Surgery

Dr. McDermott is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and received his MD degree from New York Medical College.  He completed his surgical residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.  He finished a surgical endoscopy fellowship at the Medical Center of Central Massachusetts and was Visiting Fellow in surgery at the University College Dublin, Ireland.  Dr. McDermott served his country as staff surgeon at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.  He’s held academic appointments at EVMS and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. 

 

Dr. McDermott is Board Certified in General Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons.  He has proudly served the Virginia Beach community for over twenty years including past Chairman of the Surgery Department and medical staff president at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.  He has held positions as medical director of the Coastal Cancer center and representative to the Sentara Cancer Network. 

 

His interests include gastrointestinal surgery, breast and cancer surgery, hernia surgery, surgical endoscopy and trauma care.  He has multiple medical publications to his credit. 

Sharon Smith, CMPE, FMC, CPPM, CMA(AAMA), CPC, COC, MBS
Practice Manager

Sharon joined Virginia Beach Surgery in 1989.  She is actively involved in all areas of the practice and welcomes feedback from patients and vendors. Sharon is actively involved with the Virginia MGMA serving as an Elected Director on the Executive Board, as well as the Association's Third Party Payor Representative and the Virginia ACMPE Forum Rep to MGMA.  Her professional memberships also include the American Academy of Professional Coders,  American Association of Medical Assistants, and Virginia Society of Medical Assistants. She has been a member of the adjunct faculty for Tidewater Community College and has also served and currently serves on Advisory Boards for local medical assisting programs.  Sharon also worked with the National Board of Medical Examiners for three years in conjunction with the American Association of Medical Assistant as an Item Writer for the national CMA(AAMA) exam. She has been interviewed for multiple articles for the national magazine "CMA Today" published by the American Association of Medical Assistants.

Our clinical staff is comprised of a Licensed Practical Nurse(LPN), Certified Medical Assistants and a Registered Vascular Technologist who are dedicated and concerned about your health care needs. Any questions concerning your care may be directed to them.

Our expert administrative team is ready to assist you in reception, surgical scheduling, billing, and record transcription. Any questions concerning your appointment, scheduled surgery, medical record or bill may be directed to them.

  • Our front desk staff is ready to help you in making your appointments and testing arrangements!

  • Our surgical scheduling staff coordinate your surgical arrangements including pre-operative testing, insurance authorizations and medical clearances, if needed. 

  • The clinic staff coordinate your care with our physicians, while our Registered Vascular Technician will perform your vascular testing onsite in our office. 

  • The medical records technician makes sure your medical information is secure in your record for the physicians. 

  • Our billing and insurance staff will answer questions you have about your bill or insurance, as well as complete the necessary FMLA and disability paperwork you may require.

Many of our staff have nationally recognized certifications in their fields.
